Review:
John Hawkes continues to surprise with his chameleon as the embodiment of unusual characters. This time he plays Marc Obrien, 36 year old polio victim who spent his life in a horizontal iron lung. Based on a true story, OBrien is a poet and a romantic who has never had sexual experience. After meeting with a priest (William H. Macy perfectly embodies the Berkeley radicals father), contact a therapist and he hooks up with sex surrogate Helen Hunt. Its sessions are the heart of the film competition, and take both the public and Marc map awareness and discovery tour. Hawkes is simply amazing. He imbues the character with innocence, hope and wry humor in what can only be described as a tour de force performance. Hunting is equally skilled in your role, combining professionalism, playfulness, sensuality and compassion numerous sessions require full nudity. Both actors are brave pursuit of truth and humanity and to achieve an Oscar caliber performances, thanks to its sensitive direction of writer / director Ben Lewin.
